Adjust how strong Color Tone looks in light and dark mode

Color Tone shades the months of your year so boundaries are easier to scan at a glance. It comes in a few modes — Subtle, Quarter, and Monthly — and until now every mode had one fixed strength.

The change started with user feedback.

Someone had been using AnuCal in light mode for a while, then switched to dark mode. The same Color Tone suddenly felt much stronger — month colors stood out in a way they had barely noticed before. In light mode, those accents had been easy to miss.

They were right. Light and dark are not the same canvas. Light-mode tones are opaque tints layered over white, while dark-mode tones sit on a near-black surface, so the same color reads much stronger in the dark. A single fixed value can’t feel balanced in both modes at once.

The obvious fix would be to make the light tones stronger. But strength is personal — some people want the months to shout, others want them barely there. Instead of picking one new fixed value and trading one complaint for another, we made it adjustable.

We added Tone Intensity: a slider next to the light/dark mode switch in the footer. It adjusts whichever mode you’re currently viewing, so what you drag is what you see. Light mode and dark mode each keep their own value, so you can leave dark where you like it and bring light up to match — or dial both down for a quieter year.

Together, Color Tone (which months get color) and light/dark mode (how that color reads on screen) finally work as a pair you can tune to taste.

A few things worth knowing:

  • It works with every Color Tone mode, including None, whose default weekend accent scales with the same slider.
  • 50 is the original look. If you liked the calendar the way it was, leave it at 50 — that value reproduces the previous appearance exactly.
  • It’s your setting, not the calendar’s. Intensity lives with your account rather than with any single calendar, so it stays consistent across every calendar you open.

The goal isn’t to declare one correct strength for colored months. It’s to let the calendar match how strong you want your year to feel — in whichever mode you’re in.

Try Tone Intensity in AnuCal

Choose a Color Tone mode in Display Options (None, Subtle, Quarter, or Monthly), then use the slider next to the light/dark mode switch in the footer to set the strength for each mode.
